Common Horse Terms

There are so many different horse terms out there and I will be giving you some of them by category. These are general terms that you will hear quite a bit! I know that I use them quite a bit and if you do not know them it can make things difficult to understand.

  • Stallion- A mature male horse that has not been castrated and can reproduce.
  • Mare- A mature female horse over 4 years old.
  • Foal- A young horse of either gender that is still with its mother.
  • Filly- A young female horse that is under 4 years of age.
  • Colt- A young male horse that is under 4 years of age.
  • Yearling- A horse that is officially a year old.
  • Gelding-A male horse that has been casterated.
  • Mule- A cross between a horse and a donkey.
